Concrete Finisher

The primary purpose of this position is to smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, walkways, sidewalks, roads, or curbs using a variety of hand and power tools. One will align forms for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, patch voids, and use saws to cut expansion joints.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Signaling concrete truck driver to position vehicle to facilitate pouring concrete.
  • Moving discharge chute of truck to direct concrete into forms.
  • Spreading concrete into inaccessible sections of forms with rake or shovel.
  • Leveling concrete to specified depth and workable consistency with handheld screen and floats to bring water to surface and produce soft topping.
  • Smoothing and shaping surfaces of freshly poured concrete.
  • Finishing concrete surfaces, and wetting and rubbing concrete with abrasive stone to finish.
  • Removing rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces and patching holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
  • Molding expansion joints and edges.
  • Sprinkling colored stone chips, powdered steel, or coloring powder on concrete to produce prescribed finish.
  • Producing rough concrete surface with broom.
  • Mixing cement with hoe or concrete-mixing machine.
  • Directing subgrade work, mixing of concrete, and setting of forms.
  • Breaking up and repairing old concrete surfaces.
  • Operating all equipment and tools required to do each job which may include cement mixing machines, power trowels, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and other instruments.
  • Maintaining equipment and tools to ensure long lasting use.

  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).

Position requirements include:

  • A minimum of one year of experience finishing concrete structures, pier foundations, steel forming systems, and pouring concrete is preferred. A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Must be able to lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach and other similar activities as needed.
