The collection consists of photographs, oral histories, manuscripts, audiovisual, and newspapers available to the public on-site and through the digital archive.HPL serves a population of 2.2 million citizens through a network of 37 Neighborhood Libraries, three History Research Centers, and a Central Library.?The successful candidate will communicate effectively, provide exceptional customer service, answer questions, lead tours, maintain gift shop inventory, and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.?Essential duties and functions of the position include but are not limited to the following:* Deliver front-line customer service, reference, and research support in-person, via phone, and E-Mail.* Guide customers in using library services, policies, procedures, and basic technology and equipment.* Support planning and execution of programs, tours, and outreach initiatives.* Digitize and preserve photographs and archival materials; write metadata, edit images; create inventories and indexes; transcribe oral histories.* Manage gift shop transactions, process daily deposits, and complete related administrative tasks* Execute clerical functions that sustain daily library operations.* Work one evening per month and a weekend rotation (Saturday/Sunday).* Other duties as assigned that support library operations.WORKING CONDITIONSThe position is physically comfortable, the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. Requires the ability to make simple gross motor responses within large tolerances.EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires a high school diploma or a GED.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne year of clerical/customer service experience is required.SUBSTITUTION: An Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree may substitute for the education and experience requirements.* Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office* Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds* Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others* Be detailed oriented and have strong organizing skills* An interest in African American history.Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.SELECTION / SKILLS TESTS REQUIREDThe selection process will involve application review and/or Interview.
