Corporate & Real Estate Counsel

Description:

We are seeking a commercially minded and highly collaborative Mid-Level Legal Advisor to support our U.S. operations. This role will partner closely with executive leadership, operations, development, finance, and external stakeholders to provide practical legal guidance across a broad range of transactional, operational, compliance, and development matters.

Reporting directly to the SVP & General Counsel, U.S., this position is ideal for an attorney who thrives in a fast-paced business environment and enjoys balancing legal risk with commercial outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Legal & Commercial Advisory

  • Provide practical and strategic legal advice to the U.S. business across:
  • Commercial contracts and procurement
  • Real estate, leasing, and residential tenancy matters
  • Employment-related issues and claims
  • Construction and development projects
  • Consumer protection and trade practices
  • Privacy and data protection
  • Finance and debt-related matters
  • General regulatory and operational compliance
  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting the business and advise leadership on risk exposure and mitigation strategies.

Contract Drafting & Negotiation

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of agreements, including:
  • Commercial and residential leases
  • Supplier and vendor agreements
  • Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Project and operational agreements
  • Debt and financing documentation
  • Board and investment materials
  • Support development, acquisition, and divestiture transactions through due diligence, legal documentation, and stakeholder coordination.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Assist in maintaining and enhancing the organization's Compliance Framework.
  • Support implementation of internal controls, compliance systems, and reporting tools.
  • Partner with leadership and risk teams to improve compliance processes and organizational governance.
  • Deliver training and legal guidance on key compliance and risk areas.

Stakeholder Partnership

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Finance, Development, and Executive Leadership.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders and external partners including investors, lenders, consultants, contractors, and universities.
  • Liaise with outside counsel and professional advisors as needed.

Advocacy & Claims Support

  • Support dispute resolution matters, including residential tenancy and small claims matters.
  • Assist with general litigation management and third-party claims.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed attorney in good standing within a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 4–8+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably with exposure to:
  • Commercial transactions
  • Real estate and leasing
  • Corporate or in-house legal support
  • Construction, development, or finance matters
  • Strong contract drafting and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to provide concise, commercially focused legal advice.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, collaborative business environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex legal concepts in plain English.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage competing priorities independently.

Preferred Experience

  • In-house counsel experience.
  • Exposure to compliance frameworks and risk management programs.
  • Experience supporting multi-site operations, property, development, or infrastructure-related businesses.
