Role Summary:

The role of Engineering Technical Support V will be to work closely with Sales, Application Engineering, and Coopers internal and external customers to ensure customer requirements are met. In this role, you will work systematically to make informed decisions, apply concepts to issues of moderate complexity, and resolve issues through immediate action or short-term planning.

The role is based out of Cooper Machinerys Port Northwest office in Houston, TX; remote work is available for the right candidate, with company-provided travel to the Houston location for team meetings, training, and other needs. You will play a critical role in engineering development by maintaining schedules and quality, meeting client specifications, developing design/drafting packages, and implementing new approaches to streamline deliverables, as well as editing and reviewing high-level content. You will also support internal clients, including Project Managers, Product Managers, Sales, Marketing, and Application Engineering, on gas compression projects, with a primary focus on serving as a technical authority on commissioning and troubleshooting and on training junior personnel on high-pressure fuel injection and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a technical authority for commissioning and troubleshooting high-pressure fuel injection systems on large-bore engines used in pipeline and power generation applications.
  • Leads cross-functional technical efforts (Sales, Applications, Project Management, Service, and Engineering) to define requirements, evaluate tradeoffs, and deliver solutions for complex gas compression and engine projects.
  • Owns technical issue resolution for high-impact customer events; leads structured root-cause investigations, drives corrective actions, and manages stakeholder communications through closure.
  • Develops executive-ready technical reports, recommendations, and presentations; translates complex engineering topics into clear, actionable guidance for internal and external audiences.
  • Provides expert troubleshooting and advanced diagnostics across engine, compressor, and control systems; applies data-driven methods to resolve issues of high complexity and ambiguity.
  • Acts as technical lead for engine and compressor overhauls, upgrades, and modernization projects, ensuring scope definition, engineering quality, schedule alignment, and technical risk mitigation.
  • Demonstrates strong ownership and accountability, proactively driving resolution of complex technical challenges while reinforcing a safety-first culture and engineering excellence.
  • Coaches and mentors engineers and technicians; provides on-the-job training, technical reviews, and best-practice guidance to elevate team capability and consistency of deliverables.
  • Provides subject-matter expertise in high-pressure fuel injection systems (e.g., pumps, rails, injectors, calibration parameters), supporting commissioning, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and reliability improvements.
  • Serves as an expert resource for engine control systems and instrumentation (sensors, actuators, wiring, PLC/ECU interfaces), supporting control strategy validation, alarms/trips rationalization, and system integration with compression packages.
Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum 20+ years of progressive engine experience, including significant experience in oil & gas compression/production environments and leading technical problem-solving with minimal direction.
  • Strong working knowledge of engines and compressors, including packaging interfaces, startup/commissioning practices, and field service constraints.
  • Proven ability to build trusted-advisor relationships with customers and internal stakeholders, influencing technical decisions and aligning on risk, cost, and schedule impacts.
  • Extensive reciprocating equipment experience (engines and/or compressors), including overhaul/upgrade support, failure analysis, and development/review of technical deliverables (drawings, BOMs, specifications).
  • Expert mechanical aptitude with advanced troubleshooting capability; able to independently diagnose complex, multi-system issues using test data, instrumentation, and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Demonstrated experience with high-pressure fuel injection and/or engine control systems, including controls diagnostics, sensor/actuator troubleshooting, and support of calibration or control logic changes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to author clear technical documentation and lead customer-facing technical discussions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and comfortable working within engineering systems to review, redline, and manage technical deliverables.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality, with a track record of applying standards and best practices in a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic, prioritization, and the ability to manage multiple high-visibility tasks while maintaining engineering rigor and responsiveness.
  • Demonstrated customer focus, with the ability to balance technical excellence with practical field constraints to deliver timely, high-quality outcomes.
  • Acts with a sense of urgency and ownership; consistently demonstrates leadership behaviors, including coaching/mentoring others and raising the technical bar across the organization.
