This position is primarily responsible for assisting carpenters in the construction, repair, and maintenance of vessels, barges, and shipyard structures. The Carpenter Helper supports daily operations by preparing materials, maintaining tools, and ensuring work areas are organized and safe. This role requires the ability to work in a physically demanding, safety-sensitive environment while following direction from skilled carpenters and supervisors.
Assist carpenters with measuring, cutting, and assembling wood and other materials used in marine construction and repair
Prepare and transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites
Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper storage of tools and materials
Support installation and removal of structures such as scaffolding, form work, decking, and bulkheads
Operate basic hand tools and power tools under supervision
Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of PPE and adherence to shipyard safety standards
Assist with layout work and basic carpentry tasks as directed
Perform general labor duties, including lifting, carrying, and site cleanup
Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow
Participate in safety meetings and comply with company policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
Previous experience in construction, carpentry, or shipyard environment preferred but not required
Ability to work in various environments, including outdoors, confined spaces, and at heights
Basic knowledge of hand tools and willingness to learn carpentry skills
Ability to read a tape measure and follow instructions accurately
Must have good communication skills and follow directions.
Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to take direction
Ability to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
Must meet company requirements for background, drug screening, and safety training
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.

Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
Climbing stairs, and/or vertical ladders of varying heights.
Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
Lifting objects of minimum of 10lbs, with maximum single-person lift limit of 50lbs, with frequent lifting and carrying.
Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
Visually inspecting equipment and verifying information, often in small print.
Driving and/or operating heavy machinery safely and be alert and aware of surroundings at all times.
Applying sideways/upward/downward pressure to tighten and loosen hardware.
