Maintenance Assistant

*Must be able to pass a criminal background screening and drug test. $12/hr

The Maintenance Assistant supports the maintenance department in maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment for residents, staff, and visitors. This position assists with routine maintenance, repairs, preventative maintenance activities, and compliance with life safety regulations in accordance with federal, state, and local long-term care standards.

Facility Maintenance

  • Assist with routine building maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical repairs.
  • Repair doors, locks, beds, wheelchairs, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, filters, and basic equipment parts.
  • Maintain grounds including sidewalks, parking areas, and outdoor spaces.
  • Assist with room preparation for admissions, transfers, and discharges.

Preventative Maintenance

  • Assist with preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Conduct safety rounds and report hazards immediately.
  • Help maintain maintenance logs, work orders, and inspection records.
  • Support testing of emergency equipment and systems.

Life Safety & Compliance

  • Assist with fire drills and emergency preparedness activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Life Safety Code requirements.
  • Maintain fire extinguishers, alarms, exit signage, and emergency lighting.
  • Identify and correct environmental risks to prevent accidents.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow OSHA safety standards and facility policies.
  • Use tools and equipment safely.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions or incidents.

Resident Interaction

  • Demonstrate respect, dignity, and professionalism with residents.
  • Maintain resident confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
  • Respond promptly and courteously to maintenance requests.

Additional Duties

  • Assist other departments as needed.
  • Participate in facility emergency response procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or Administrator.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

  • Previous maintenance or building services experience preferred.
  • Experience in healthcare or long-term care setting preferred but not required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and general repairs.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, mechanical equipment, and maintenance tools.
  • Possible exposure to infectious diseases in healthcare environment.
  • May require on-call or weekend coverage as assigned.

Licensure/Certification

  • Valid driver's license preferred (if facility vehicle use required).
  • HVAC, electrical, or maintenance certifications preferred but not required.
