We are seeking highly motivated and experienced individuals to fill various Diesel Mechanic roles within our organization. These positions are critical to ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our operations. Whether you are an entry-level candidate or a seasoned professional, we have opportunities that match your skills and experience.

Basic diesel mechanic identifies engine components, performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, troubleshooting common issues, using diagnostic tools, reading wiring diagrams, basic electrical system knowledge, proper use of hand tools, and the ability to safely lift and maneuver heavy components.

Pay range: $19-$24

An intermediate diesel mechanic should be proficient in routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, filter replacements, and fluid level checks, along with the ability to diagnose and repair more complex engine issues, utilize diagnostic tools effectively, understand basic electrical systems within a diesel engine, perform minor component replacements, and have a strong understanding of safety procedures while working on heavy machinery; essentially bridging the gap between entry-level maintenance and advanced engine overhauls.

Pay range: $24-$30

Advanced diesel mechanics possess in-depth knowledge of complex engine systems, advanced troubleshooting techniques, expert diagnostic abilities using specialized tools, proficient understanding of electrical systems within diesel engines, ability to perform complex repairs like engine overhauls, knowledge of specialized maintenance procedures, proficiency in hydraulic systems, welding skills, and the ability to interpret and analyze complex diagnostic data, often requiring a high level of attention to detail and safety awareness.

Pay range: $30.00 and up

Diesel Mechanics collaborates with other repair team members to ensure equipment operates safely and efficiently according to the operator's needs. They often have the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Consulting with department heads, and colleges and reading work orders to evaluate the tasks required.
  • Preparing work orders after fully scoping out the issues.
  • Running diagnostic tests on diesel engines and interpreting the results to offer suitable solutions.
  • Inspecting vehicle systems, including suspensions, steering, transmissions, brakes, and exhausts.
  • Repairing or replacing vehicle transmissions, brakes, engines, and other associated parts.
  • Conducting field visits in case of an emergency or sudden breakdown.
  • Driving tests our repaired vehicles to gauge their performance, and document results.
  • Completing oil changes, wheel balancing, alignment, and brake checks
  • Maintaining a log of records of parts inventory and serviced vehicles.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of various equipment, its electrical systems, and the mechanisms of a diesel engine
  • In-depth knowledge of diesel engine components and operational mechanisms
  • Superior knowledge of maintenance tools and repair equipment
  • Comfortable using mechanical and electrical power tools
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems and other relevant electronics
  • Proficiency in the use of diesel engine diagnostic software
  • A valid driver's license
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Effective collaboration and communication skills

Minimum Education Requirements for Diesel Mechanic Position:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED. Certification and training in diesel engine repair from a vocational school or community college.
  • Training Modules: Must include driving trains, preventive maintenance, inspection, engine architecture, and electronic systems.
  • Preferred Certification: Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) for Diesel Mechanics, with at least two years of work experience.
  • Experience: Completion of practical learning experience required for vocational certification or one to three years of professional experience. Apprenticeship experience with an experienced Diesel Mechanic, where candidates observed and practiced assessment and repair strategies under supervision, is also acceptable.
  • On-the-Job Training: Candidates should have completed or be willing to complete the company's on-the-job training or apprenticeship program, working under the supervision of an experienced, in-house Diesel Mechanic.
  • Additional Qualifications: A degree in mechanical or automotive engineering is advantageous, providing more in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge related to diesel engine repair.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand for extended periods, walk frequently, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The work environment involves exposure to hazards, risks, or discomforts typical of working with or around machinery with exposed moving parts, errant chemicals, and heavy equipment. Additionally, there is exposure to disagreeable weather conditions and extreme levels of temperature, ventilation, lighting, and noise.
