Job Summary

The Wholesale Originator position within the NRG Business team will be responsible for originating, structuring, and negotiating electric commodity transactions with a focus on the East wholesale power markets, including PJM, ISONE, NYISO and MISO; however, some aspects may require knowledge of other markets (e.g. ERCOT) from time-to-time. Our team works at the intersection of retail and wholesale to assist in finding deal structures that advance both our wholesale and retail businesses. This individual will work closely with both the Commercial Operations teams (Power and Emissions Trading Desks) and the NRG Business C&I Sales Teams to help facilitate deal flow and manage internal and external issues related to valuing and closing transactions. This individual will be expected to act as a subject matter expert, well-versed in power and emissions market fundamentals and capable of explaining key market dynamics to a variety of audiences. This individual will build and establish relationships with counterparties (i.e. renewable and storage developers, trading counterparties, aggregations (CCA, Municipalities, Cooperatives), utilities, private equity and banks) with the intent to grow and maintain customer business as well as execute structured transactions. The ideal candidate should have a strong working knowledge of the physical power markets and both voluntary & regulatory based emissions markets to structure transactions and generate value for NRG. This role will require a highly motivated and transactional individual as performance will be measured on executed transactions. You will report to the Director of Origination and work closely with other members of the Origination team which covers a wide variety of wholesale activity across all the deregulated markets. You will collaborate extensively with team members across the company as NRG continues to grow.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Originate, structure and negotiate power transactions that support Commercial Operations and the C&I Sales Team.
  • Work with internal groups (including Trading, Legal, Risk, Structuring, Pricing, Sales and others) to manage all issues surrounding deals and help facilitate all approvals and close transactions.
  • Understand and be willing to explain market fundamentals and dynamics to audiences with varying levels of energy related knowledge.
  • Lead sponsor in "selling" the strategic rationale and deal economics for structured transactions (i.e. coordination with various Trading Desk, Structuring Team, Legal and Credit in developing deal summary for management review and approval).
  • Co-develop and support strategy for the NRG portfolio in coordination with Business, Commercial Operations, and other key groups across the organization.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of origination, power marketing or power trading experience is required
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • Deep understanding of contracting mechanism of both wholesale (e.g. ISDA, EEI, REC Master Agreements, Long form contracts such as PPAs) and retail customer agreements.
  • Advanced knowledge of the electric utility industry, electric energy markets, changes in emission landscape (e.g. state program changes) and market fundamentals, is required
  • Ability to navigate large organizations and oversee back-to-back structures with the Retail Sales team.
  • Knowledge of hedging, losses, congestion, demand management, demand response/VPP, options, basis risk and other power marketing concepts is required.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability frameworks that retail customers may be adhering to.
  • Strong commercial skills that identifies and closes large wholesale power transactions.

Working Conditions

Evening and weekend work, while not the norm, may be required as business needs dictate. Up to 25% travel requirement to establish and maintain customer business.

Location

Princeton, Houston or Pittsburgh preferred; Remote approved. Hybrid working schedule (4/1).

The base salary range for this position is: $144,000 - $237,600. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonus, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards. In addition the position may be eligible to participate in the benefits program which include, but are not limited to, medical, vision, dental, 401K, and flexible spending accounts.
