Trade Compliance Attorney

Description:

Major, Lindsey & Africa's client has an immediate need for an interim Trade Compliance Attorney.


Overview: Our client seeks a skilled, Legal Trade Compliance Attorney (Part-Time)


Company: Our client is a well respected energy company


Experience: Successful candidates will have at least 5 years of relevant experience


Location: Houston, TX - Onsite 3 days per week (Part-Time)


Key Responsibilities:

Sanctions

  • Stay abreast of and update the business regarding changing sanctions landscape (i.e., issuance or withdrawal of sanctions, issuance or withdrawal of General/Specific Licenses). This includes both US (Office of Foreign Asset Control) and UK (Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation).
  • Advise commercial business and trade floor from a legal-sanctions perspective regarding the details/structure of particular business opportunities.

Antiboycott

  • Review clauses received from counterparties to determine whether they are proscribed/reportable antiboycott clauses.
  • Review information provided by BU quarterly to determine whether clauses should be included in the Bureau of Industry Security report, review such report.

General

  • Review client responses to Know Your Client (“KYC”) requests from a legal/compliance perspective.
  • Assist with various reporting requirements from a Compliance perspective.
  • Review compliances clauses in a wide variety of contracts from a Compliance - FCPA/Antiboycott/Sanctions/conflict of interest perspective.
  • Review and assist with training and presentations regarding compliance issues.
  • Assist import/export team and Marine team regarding various issues related to sanctions and customs/trade laws (sanctioned vessels, duty drawbacks, etc.)


Qualifications

  • JD and US state bar
  • 5–10+ years of experience in sanctions, trade compliance, export controls, or international regulatory compliance.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • OFAC sanctions regulations
  • OFSI sanctions regime
  • U.S. antiboycott regulations
  • FCPA and related compliance frameworks
  • Experience advising commercial or trading businesses on sanctions and compliance risks.
  • Familiarity with BIS reporting requirements and international trade compliance processes preferred.
  • Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical business guidance.
  • Additional Insights
  • Experience in energy, commodities trading, shipping/marine, or international trade environments.
  • Prior in-house experience working closely with commercial or trading desks.
