Competitive Salary and Comprehensive Benefits

The annual base salary for newly appointed agents ranges from $49,739 to $89,518, based on your experience and assigned duties. Fully trained agents may qualify for an additional 25% of their base pay following the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This position offers a clear career progression, advancing through grade levels without the need for reapplying.

Agents benefit from a robust package of federal benefits, including health and dental insurance, a generous leave program, and a retirement plan akin to a traditional ROTH 401(k).

*Recruitment Incentive* Earn up to $20,000 in bonuses at various points throughout your career, especially for those accepting priority assignments.

*Retention Incentive* Qualify for up to $40,000 distributed over the first four years of employment.

Key Responsibilities

As a Border Protection Agent, your contributions will be critical to ensuring the safety of the American public through:

  • Identifying and interviewing individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws.
  • Preventing and apprehending undocumented individuals and smugglers through strategic surveillance and tactical operations.
  • Interpreting physical evidence concerning illegal entries and smuggling activities.
  • Conducting patrols and performing inspections of transportation and vehicles.
  • Utilizing various government assets for operational duties along the international borders.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GL-5 grade level, you need:

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating strong decision-making skills in high-stress situations; or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; or
  • A combination of relevant experience and education.

For the GL-7 grade level, candidates must have:

  • One year of specialized work experience in law enforcement, skills in information analysis, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure; or
  • A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one year of graduate-level education in a relevant field.

Additional Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must have resided in the U.S. for at least three of the last five years.
  • Applicants must be under 40 years of age at the time of selection.
  • Must complete ongoing training, including attendance at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy.
