**Position Summary:**
Ensures leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in swimming lessons. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement, youth development, and healthy living in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Responsible for supervising swim instructors and ensuring they meet essential job functions.

**Essential Functions:**

  • Know and respond to all emergency procedures in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Conduct swim lessons as needed, following YMCA standards.
  • Prepare for each swim session by communicating with parents, conducting orientations, planning classes, and overseeing skill tests.
  • Observe lessons to ensure effective teaching and safety techniques, adjusting for participant needs.
  • Create positive experiences through member engagement and communication.
  • Hold instructors accountable for positive experiences and provide feedback.
  • Address parent concerns and communicate with the Aquatics Director.
  • Distribute and analyze participant surveys.
  • Maintain attendance and progress records.
  • Perform equipment checks and report damages.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.
  • Coordinate private lessons and manage scheduling.
  • Monitor registration and assist with class adjustments.
  • Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Support system timelines and employee compliance, including timesheet approvals.

**Qualifications:**

  • Minimum age 18, at least 5 years older than the oldest participant.
  • Demonstrate swim instructor skills per YMCA standards.
  • Obtain necessary certifications before first shift: CPR, First Aid, Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention, etc.
  • At least one year of teaching experience; YMCA swim lesson experience preferred.
  • Ability to instruct and observe swim techniques effectively.
  • Ability to relate to diverse groups.

**Skills:**
Ability to read, interpret, and teach safety and instructional materials, communicate effectively, and perform basic math and reasoning tasks. Physical ability to perform rescue tasks and monitor the aquatic environment.
